Luna Luna tells the story of the world’s first art amusement park and the mythic figure who brought it to life.
The Viennese artist and provocateur, André Heller, managed to convince the greatest artists of the 20th century, from Salvador Dali to Jean-Michel Basquiat, to create masterworks for the park—which he called “Luna Luna.” It opened in Hamburg in 1987 to mixed success, and by the end of the summer was locked away in shipping containers and sent off to Texas, where the works sat in the desert for 35 years. In 2021 an unlikely financier bought the art sight unseen, and André got his second chance to give birth to his greatest creation.
